How to Write a Post That Generates Engagement
Turning viewers into readers with a simple routine
You spend hours writing what you believe to be the perfect post.
You cram in all the SEO you can think of and make a bazillion bullet points of information.
You post it.
The next day, you check the stats.
Nada. Zip. A big fat zero.
Do you know why? Of course not. You did what all the gurus told you to do and you can’t understand.
But I’ll tell you why.
It has no heart.
You’re following every formula out there but the one that matters.
I’m going to give you two secrets here that will change all of that and I wish I knew them myself a whole lot sooner.
- Write with a passion for writing.
- Follow an outline, not a formula.
Writing with Passion
SEO is fantastic if you want to suck all the life out of your article and sound like that creepy sales guy at the used parking lot.
Sincerity and authenticity sells itself. That is what you should strive for.
Get real with people. Show them who you are. Give them a glimpse into your life.
This is something they can connect with. This is something that will resonate deep inside their bones.
This is something that will stick in their minds and make them come back for more.
Also, it’s something that AI cannot replicate and that’s a very real enemy in today’s world of writers.
But AI doesn’t have passion. You do.
If you can show the reader that you’re passionate about what you do and really drive that point home, you will have a reader that sticks with you.
And there is nothing more important than establishing that bond between yourself and your readers.
Repeat customers is how most businesses make money, and if you think of your writing as a business that’s what you want as well.
Dedicated readers lead to flowing income that compounds.
An Outline to Blog About
Now, remember I said to stop following formulas.
While that is true, it’s always helpful to have a template or an outline to follow.
Because that will lead to repeatable results.
Here’s the template I use:
Attention: You have to grab the reader’s attention and never let go. You initiate this by telling them something personal and relatable. This is your hook. Once you have them hooked, they’ll continue reading.
Introduction/Lead: Continue the hook by implementing the PAS method.
- Problem: Identify the problem by clearly addressing the challenge that your target audience faces. It should be specific and resonate with them deeply. Write about this problem using empathetic language, showing the reader you understand their pain. This establishes a connection between you and builds trust
- Agitation: Amplify the problem by delving deeper into its implications and the negative emotions associated with it. This validates the reader’s feelings on the subject. Write about this by discussing its effects and potential long-term consequences if it remains unsolved. This increases the reader’s emotional investment into finding a solution.
- Solution: Present the reader the solution. Make it clear, attainable, and directly related to the Problem and Agitation.
Some important notes on using the PAS method here:
- Know your audience. Tailor your message to them.
- Be authentic. Don’t exaggerate the problem to the point of losing authenticity and breaking their trust.
- Provide value. Ensure the solution genuinely addresses the problem and offers real value to the reader.
Value-Based Content: Offer actionable and attainable solutions to the reader’s problem. Don’t blow smoke. Give them something you know works.
Conclusion/Close: Inspire the reader, encouraging them to take the first step to solving their problem by trying your method.
That’s all there is to it.
This outline WILL get you readers because each article, blog post, or social media post you make that follows it will give them a solution they can try.
One Final Thing
Always include a CTA (call to action) at the end of your post pointing towards something you offer.
Whether that’s a newsletter or a product or simply asking them to follow you for more information, that will give them an opportunity to dive deeper into a journey with you.
It will also get them into your inner circle, which is exactly where you want your reader in order to turn them into conversion metrics that will then turn into a flowing income stream.
This is how you sell without being creepy about it.
