From Corporate Chains to Creative Freedom
My Journey to Becoming My Own Boss
Today’s economic situation is unreal.
People are losing their jobs left and right. Huge companies are laying people off by the thousands.
How do I know this?
In 2023, over 224,000 people were laid off in the tech industry alone.
I was one of those people.
I had a job making six figures, sat on my butt all day, editing technical writing and creating presentations for a Fortune 50 company.
Then, they decided I was expendable.
Just like that, I couldn’t pay my bills or live the lifestyle I wanted. My debt piled up and my credit rating took a nosedive.
I had to take jobs I didn’t like just to keep the lights on. This past year I’ve worked as a pizza store manager and a factory worker, breaking my back for money that didn’t even keep me above the poverty line.
I’ve sent out over 1,500 applications for jobs I’m not only qualified for, but overqualified. And every answer has been the same… Thanks, but no thanks.
The 9 to 5 working world had become so uncertain for me, I knew I needed a plan.
So, I came up with one.
I became a Niche of One.
Clearly a lot of you folks out there are facing the same situation.
You’re struggling. Bills are skyrocketing, debt is piling up, and life is getting harder and harder each and every day.
It’s not easy to survive in a world that seems to want you to fail.
And realizing our corporate overlords don’t care about us is an eye-opening experience. No matter how good you are, how good your work is, or how strong your work ethic is, they will still cut you out of the bottom line in a second if it means higher profits for shareholders.
We all know it’s not fair, and we all know that THEY don’t care.
To them, we’re nothing more than a statistic. We’re not people. We’re part of the bottom line.
And that makes us expendable.
But the truth is, the things that give us value are not expendable, and someone wants to learn from you.
The Solution?
Become your own boss.
I know, I know… it sounds easy but it’s hard to do, right?
Not really. Not when you consider what you have to bring to the table.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably a writer as well. That means you have a lot to bring to the table. You have a skill that is immediately transferable into cold, hard cash.
If you’re reading this and you’re not a writer… why not? If you can string together words into sentences that are coherent and have meaning, you can write.
The trick to all this is to write well.
To write convincingly and with the proper tone.
To turn readers into believers and believers into clients.
That’s my entire purpose in writing here on this blog… to help you get rid of the chains that bind you, and as a byproduct get rid of the chains that bind me.
Because all of this (waves around hands frantically at the world) is nothing more than a game.
And it’s a game you can win.
Thanks for reading!
