Become a Niche of One

The economy is fine the talking heads say.

This past year I went from Project Management at a Fortune 100 company to a pizza place manager and factory worker.

I hope to manage a retail store soon. No, I’m not kidding.

Over 1,500 applications have been put in since April of 2023.

All “thanks but no thanks” unless it’s a job that underpays and for which I’m over experienced.

Going from six figures to being under the poverty line has been eye opening.

Is this discouraging?

Yes, quite a bit. I have a lot of good experience and I work very hard.

The real question is will it make me give up?

Absolutely not! I’m a hard charger that won’t quit until I’m dead.

But I want to take control of my life and I want to write.

I want to write and I want to get paid, but I also want to inspire and encourage people to choose themselves over corporate lives that suck away their dignity and eat up their time.

I want to write about freedom.

I want to make fiction stories for people to enjoy.

I want to write about all the things I find interesting.

Mostly, I want to be able to control my destiny and not worry about the whims of corporate overlords and bottom lines dictating whether I can pay my bills or go to the doctor.

Then someone, the amazing Evan Kelly (who I highly recommend following), gave me the best piece of advice I can imagine in today’s world for a writer.

“Become a niche of one.”

They suggested I write about where I’ve been and where I’m going and what I know.

They suggested I go all in.

Not only did this make me realize I had never done that before but it also made me wake up to the fact that I’ve always been scared to do it.

In fact, I’ve been scared to do a lot of things my whole life because what I wanted to do was not considered the norm.

I was a slave to the status quo.

I was limited by what OTHERS thought my life should be.

I have a tremendous amount of experience to offers that spans a plethora of topics, and I know how to do one thing very well — and that’s write.

That one piece of actionable advice took away those chains.

Now, every spare minute I have is going to be focusing on writing, something I’ve loved to do since I was a child.

No topic is off-limits to me because I am a niche of one.

I am the niche.

I am the controller of my destiny.

I’m going to figure out a way to make this a living, do it on my own terms, and no longer worry about the corporate rat race.

And I’m going to do it very publicly, so you can all join me on that journey.

I don’t expect it to be easy, because nothing worth doing rarely is, but I’m focused and I have determination and grit to get the job done.

So, it’s time to get moving and make the impossible possible.
