Winnie runs the Vault, the climate-controlled room under the label where the masters live, the tape, the lacquers, the clean digital transfers, all of it cataloged in a card system she built and a numbering scheme only she fully holds. She can put her hand on any release in the catalog in under a minute, and she can put her hand on a few that are not in the catalog, reels labeled in her own hand for bands GZS has not signed and songs nobody has written, filed correctly, sleeved, waiting. She does not explain the extra shelves and nobody with sense asks. She dusts on Mondays, runs the dehumidifier on a timer, and signs the temperature log twice a day in blue ink. The count is always right. She has been down there longer than the lease, and the lease is old.
